I can't seem to get a straight answer on how to find the right printer that works with the iPad? Please advise.

Ok, google AirPrint and you should get a link to Apple's website which should give you a list of compatible AirPrint printers. remember though, that printer manufacturers are always bringing out newer models that may not be listed by Apple yet.
When shopping for printers, check the box specs, it should say somewhere that it's AirPrint compatible.
Alternatively, most newer wifi printers by the main manufacturers have their own printing apps. Printing with these can be a bit more clunky but they do work well, and some even offer scanning capability straight to your iPad if its one of those all-in-one/ multi-function printers.
