AppleInsider has some exclusive news on the forthcoming 12.9-inch iPad today, directly from a source familiar with Apple’s plans. Aside from confirming the existence of the larger iPad, the source also said that it would have several features that would be totally new to the iPad range.

In particular, the source said that the 12.9-inch iPad would have an NFC radio, which could possibly mean that the so-called “iPad Pro” could be used as a payment-receiving terminal for Apple Pay. It’s unlikely that the larger tablet will get the tap-to-pay feature, however.

NFC appearing for the first time in an iPad could also make for easier pairing with accessories.

The same source also reported that the larger iPad will have a new touch screen with improved touch latency, designed especially to go with the rumoured Bluetooth stylus, which is said to feature pressure-sensitive input.

Well-sourced KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first wrote about the possibility of Apple launching a stylus earlier this year.

The source added that Apple is also set to bring the new MacBook and Apple Watch’s Force Touch input to the larger iPad screen.

Also rumoured by the very informative source is that the iPad Pro will have a USB-C input, but it’s not yet known if this would be a second port, or a replacement for the Lightning connector, although leaked case schematics point to two port openings.

As far as the processor for the 12.9-inch iPad is concerned, AppleInsider’s source says that it will have a new A-series processor.
