International Business Times has a new twist on the iPad 3 rumours today, with word from FBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger that he has had indications from Apple’s supply chain that Apple could be planning to launch what he calls an “iPad 2 Plusâ€, which he says will be “marginally different†from the iPad 2. Berger says that he has heard that Apple has been issuing requests for quotes from component makers for such a device, which could well be launched by the end of 2011. According to Berger, the iPad 2 Plus’ display resolution could have an increased pixel density from the iPad and iPad 2’s 132 pixels per inch (ppi) to 250-300 ppi. This would still not be up to the iPhone 4’s Retina Display’s 326 ppi, however. Berger concluded his note to clients with a word of caution, saying “we await more confirming data points from other supply chain contacts before fully believing a new iPad device is coming in 2011.â€

Well, at least this story sounds a lot more realistic than an iPad3 in this calendar year. I do understand why Apple wants to do 'something' in response to the Samsung offering.
