Anybody used an Airport Express?

Hey guys.

I want to play music from the iPad through my surround sound.

Will the Airport Express allow this? The reviews I've seen only seem to show it being used to stream from itunes on the pc using the iPad as a remote. I don't want to use the the pc at all, just play the music off the iPad.

Any ideas?

Yes and no.

The AirportExpress let's you stream music from both iTunes and the iPad, though only from one at a time. However, the sound will be in stereo. If you want to stream surround sound (5.1) than you should buy an AppleTV instead.

Very impressed! I'm loving it. Very easy to set up and now I can so easily just flick over the channel on my amp and play music from the iPad. Brilliant!

Also, if I want to watch a quick YouTube video or IMDB trailer I can just pop the sound through the surround sound. Even if I play Angry Birds I can have the sound through my speakers! Lol.

£35 very well spent.

So can you connect Apple TV to your stereo as well as your widescreen tv? I only see a single hdmi cable in the pack that comes with it.

And if so, do you need to have a laptop/mac/pc with iTunes on and connected wirelessly to stream music to it, or can you just stream iTunes from your iPhone or iPad?

This thread was about airport express which has a combined optical/stereo output via 3.5mm jack.

The apple TV has a optical and HDMI ouput, so providing your stereo has optical input or even HDMI (if its a AV receiver rather than stereo), then yes you can connect to it.

You can use airpay direct from your ipad or iphone (providing its not a 3g or lower model) to stream music to either the airport express and Apple TV (video as well for Apple Tv).
