App Updates

Hi, App Store icon on iPad has a 2 in the top right corner to indicate 2 updates are available. Tap icon and it goes to the store but when I select update, cannot connect to iTunes store is displayed. I've tried everything but the action to solve the problem, none of the following worked:
Power off, reboot, sign out of iTunes, power off back on sign in again, switched off app genius, tried changing any setting to do with apps - all to no avail

Any suggestions on what might work or a link to a thread that tells me what to do?

Thanks Semel, tried all that and still can't update apps with the "can't connect to store" script appearing. No problems purchasing apps or connecting to other services.
