Apple Account and Credit card details

Why do I need to set up an Apple account including giving them my Credit Card details just to download a free app? I give firms these details if I buy something but I don't let them keep the details afterward. Why should I do it here?

I've just got an iPad Pro and I'm already starting to miss my old Hudl!

Is there any way around this?

You don't need to set it up with your credit card details. There are various ways to avoid this. Here's how:
Create an iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store account without a credit card or other payment method - Apple Support
