Hi all,

First time poster, short time lurker..

IPad 3, 64gb 3g & iPad 1, 32gb WiFi only & iPhone 4s. GF has an iPad 2, 32gb WiFi only. Also have Apple TV gen 1 at home. I have an iTouch somewhere and a couple of iPods.

A year ago I was a PC and blackberry fan. Played with my sisters iPad and was a convert. Company switched to iPhone a short time later. Wow. The world is a much better place and everything integrates well. Still use the netbook to run iTunes. Need a good reason for a Macbook Air - LOL. Hiwever lack of a Microsoft Access database emulator puts macbook off the list for now. Use Access a lot.

Biggest functionality for me is eMail and social media. It's nice in an airport lounge to flip open the iPad and get 20 emails written while the PC warriors are still booting up and connecting VPN...

IPad is the best all around lifestyle tool going. I use it for all my media. Have disabled the cable tv company completely and subscribe to current tv seasons on iTunes. Coupled with Netflix and I have too much to watch! The best art is by subscribing on the iPad I can pick up latest episodes anywhere - great fir me as I travel over 150 days a year. And with the recent change to the itunes software I can share them all across my platforms - cool move Apple! The only thing I miss is streaming sports. I'd watch downloadable delayed coverage if Apple had it, and had it at the right subscription price. Probably the last thing keeping networks and cable companies alive...

The next big app for me is iBooks. I read a lot. Carrying several big books on a mulit week trip was a pain. Now I carry my whole library with me! The Kindle app is decent enough and millions of free books for that.

Music is still primarily an iPod job and I have one in the car and one on the boat. I dont buy iTunes but rather rip CDs myself. I don't like that I can't share iTunes songs on non-ios stuff. My kid still has an mp3 player. One thing that Apple is doing wrong. Music on the iPad is primarily while reading.

On a side note, streaming music through Apple tv and surround sound while having my photo library on slideshow is a brilliant thing to have on.

For work the iPad is still weak. Creating media just isn't there yet no matter if Apple professes to be business friendly. EMail, calendar and the recent addition of Outlook task list are all good. Word, Excel, Powerpoint not so much. However it is a capable presentation tool with the correct adapter. Attending collaboration meetings on Webex is also useful when coupled with the phone. Fonts don't always come out right in Powerpoint but our company recently set up an automatic system to convert to pdf so files are smaller and renderings are correct. GoodReader is a decent tool and PrintBureau is used to connect to wireless printers in our field offices and does a decent job.

Facetime is cool for Apple contacts and Skype is also great. Much better now with the iPad 3.

On the weekends the iPad goes to the boat and is amy navigation tool, anchor alarm and car gps navigator.

All in all ai guess I am in big time. But in this forum probably preaching to a pretty big choir.

Cheers

These are the hacking section rules for all you jail breakers (and would be jail breakers) http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/2892-hacking-section-rules-please-read.html

We also have an app for this forum. The link to download the app is: Discussion Forum for iPad Users for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

You can download the manual for your iPad here http://support.apple.com/manuals/ and in iBooks search for "iPad user guide for" and you will find free comprehensive manuals for both iOS 4 and 5.

If you have other Apple products or are interested in other Apple kit then why not join our sister forum too at http://www.appleforums.net/

Thanks. I do use the iPad app for the forum. I also use the same software for another forum I am in. I was a mod over there for a couple of years.

Frankly, I wont have a lot of time for this forum, too much to do already but I will lurk and check in once in a while.

Great resource you have running here.

For microsoft access or other PC only apps I'd have to tell you to install a virtual machine manager on your Mac. I've found Parallels desktop works great, but there is also wmware and virtualbox.

I have windows 8, windows 2008 server and windows 7 all running on my MacBook pro.

To tie it into the iPad there is a parallels iPad client available.

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the tip. We have one guy on a macbook trial. I'll mention it to him and see how it goes.

These days I like other folks blazing the technology trail. I jump in when everything works - LOL
