This week turned out to be a very special one for Apple. The Podcast section of the iTunes Store has registered its 1 billionth subscriber. The happy occasion has been celebrated with the creation of a special page featuring new, as well as classic Podcasts. The new section added due to the event brings TEDTalks, 60 Minutes, This American Life and many more. The news was shared with the same fuss via the company’s iTunes Podcast Twitter account. From the official statement:
“In honor of the one billion milestone, Apple has highlighted a number of its most popular podcasts over the years in a new iTunes section which offers up a number of classic Podcasts alongside New and Noteworthy content. […]But the heart of podcasting is finding your favorite voices in this exciting field and subscribing to the best ones. To celebrate reaching 1 billion podcast subscribers, we’re highlighting some of the most popular podcasts of all time, as well as a collection of captivating new shows.â€
Podcasts were originally launched in 2005 and they proved to be quite popular. The service allowed users to create their own radio like shows and post them for download on the iTunes store. With this special occasion Apple revealed that the subscriptions are spread over 250,000 unique podcasts that were created in 100 different languages. Since the service has been launched for the public, 8 million standalone episodes have been uploaded to the iTunes Store.
