The Bing blog has just announced its brand spanking new update for its iPad app, which introduces an ingenious new search feature called Lasso, which enables iPad owners to search on touch devices using their finger. According to the blog post, the Bing team was inspired to think of a new way to search on a tablet because of what they refer to as the “painful” experience of searching on a tablet when you’re in the middle of reading something. They reckon that simply copying and pasting text from a web page into a search box can take up to nine steps on the iPad, but if you use Lasso, it will take only two steps.

The newly released update also includes an enhanced movie experience where you can now view multiple showtime days and movie theatres, as well as the ability to swipe through the previous six Bing homepage pictures, plus many more tweaks and improvements.

I love how the app is structured and the weather features alone is reason enough to have it. It’s fast, accurate and presents the information in F/C. I’m considering to delete my other weather apps. The other features are also well integrated. The only real weak spot is it’s pithy voice recognition. Hopefully, they can improve on that and bring it up to full 5-Star status.

Clearly Google is ahead in this area. How Apple's alliance with Nuance will affect iOS is also worth contemplating.
