Can i recover a deleted email ?

Using iPad2, iOS 5.1.1 and gmail.
If so, is there a time limit to the retrieval?
Please provide a "by the numbers" procedure.

I don't use gmail so totally unsure, but in my mail, I click the top left hand of screen "inbox" which then opens up my mail folders, one of them being "Trash" check in there, if you've emptied trash, then dependant on your pc's settings, it may still be in there.
