Can public domain movies be downloaded to my ipad?

I searched the forums but can not find an answer to this. There are some old movies at public domain sites that have fallen out of copyright and can be downloaded. I do not see any public domain items in the movie section of iTunes. Is there any way to download items to your iPad outside of Apple venues? I have a flight Friday and would like to put a couple of the public domain movies on my iPad for viewing? Thanks for any help.
