My husband has a lot of data backed up to the iCloud and has run out of space; He does not want to pay for additional space. We would appreciate any suggestions.

His only other choice is to back up his iPad in iTunes on his computer, where the backup will be stored on the hard drive or Flash storage, whichever one his computer uses. It's not possible to backup the iPad to abything other than iCloud or iTunes.

From what I am reading this will back up an iPad.
WD My Passport Wireless 1 TB Wi-Fi Mobile Storage

You can copy and read a great many file types from this kind of device (using it's companion app). That's not the same thing as a backup, which can restore not only selected files, but apps, settings, account information, etc.

At this time it is only possible to backup and restore from a backup using iTunes or iCloud.

Talking about iTunes, has anyone had trouble with the new iTunes update not recognizing their iPhones, iPads or iPods? I've seen a few people complaining about that issue. I'm updating just yet, I want to see how things go

I've had no problems with several iPads and iPhones updated to iOS 8.1.3. iTunes recognised them all.
