Cannot Facetime with my Wife.

We just bought Ipads 6th generation for each other for Mother's day and Father's day. The problem we are having is that we can not Facetime each. We have a shared AppleID, but setup separate icloud IDs as we thought this was what we needed to do. When we bring up contacts, ours are not highlighted in blue, so we cannot facetime each other. Any ideas as to our problem?

What exactly does “shared Apple ID” mean:
Do you use the same Apple ID on both devices, in addition to different iCloud IDs, or do you use family sharing (Family Sharing)?

As J.A. suggests, you need separate Apple IDs to be able to FaceTime each other.

Since the email address is determined by the iCloud ID, it’s the iCloud ID that has to be different. Make sure you’ve selected different email addresses in Settings > FaceTime on the two different iPads, and use those addresses to call each other. If you are using a phone number (linked through your iPhone) only one of you will be able to use it as your send/receive FaceTime address.

iPads not associated with an iPhone will need to be on a wi-fi network to make and receive calls.

Note: Apple ID and iCloud ID are the same for most people, but can be set up separately.
