Can't put ipad into recovery

i have tried doing it loads of times but nothing works.
i have read you have to hold the bottom button and when you see the apple logo plug it into the laptop with itunes running and it then should say that it is n recovery.

when i try it it doesnt turn on while holding the bottom button so i hold the top one and bottom one at the same time and as soon as i see the logo i let go of the top and plug it in to the laptop and it just syncs to itunes.

Any idea why it doesn work or what im doing wrong?

sorry forgot to say i have already trid that. that was the first one i tried

i have finally done it, used a different computer.
now i am having trouble with the umbrella firmware
i type my key in and click cydia in the dropdown box and click save.
where does it save to because it didnt say. also it says no device connected
