Charging via PC & itunes

Hi learned ones !

I now have a lovely second hand iPad 2 which is in great condition and seems to work well.

When I connect to my laptop it syncs fine , but displays 'not charging' - and does exactly that, does not charge ?? If I plug it into the mains it charges fine.

Is this normal, or is there some sneaky setting that I am missing ?

Best to plug into mains....I understand it will only trickle charge when plugged into computer so it is not worth the while.
