Guess I'm just dense on this subject. I don't see how having to set your devices down on a charging pad in a specific place is significantly different than plugging it into a cable in a specific place.

It's cool(ish), but not significantly more convenient.

Now, if my devices automatically started to charge when I entered the house or car, then I'd be tempted.

Yes, a case that makes it difficult to get to the ports would be a good reason. You should pitch it to LifeProof or Otterbox and see you can talk them into making a combination wireless charging/enviroment-resistant case.
