How do you clear open tabs?

Hmm, I know you meant well, but that might be confusing to someone with limited experience with the iPad, due to the steps you left out.
Two things. One, you have to be in the multitask bar (double tap the Home button, or swipe up with four fingers), and second (after you have long pressed an icon until it starts to jiggle) you will see a small minus sign, not an x. x means you're about to delete something from the iPad. - (minus) means you're just closing the app.
