closing tabs in safari with ios8

The ipad users guide for ios8 gives the instruction to close open tabs in safari "tap x in the top left corner or swipe tab to the left". No x appears in the top left of my screen and swiping to the left doesn't work. Would welcome advice on closing tabs each time I want to leave the site.

Tap the icon at the top right:

Swipe the page to the left or use x to close the tab:

Tap the tab to get full screen view again.

When you are on a Safari page (and you have more than one loaded) you should see the "x" in the left corner of the tab, like this:

Tap the "x" and the tab will close.

If you only have one tab open, you will see that you don't have an "x" - so you can't tap it. Or, you may want to close all tabs by swiping.

In this case, do a two-finger pinch on the screen and you will then get this view:

Then, just swipe the tab you want to close to the left and it will disappear.

Hope this helps.

I see J. A. has beaten me to it. :)

However, since we both describe different ways to do the actions, I've left mine here, also.

Between the two of us, I hope we got your answer.
