Contacts on gmail on iPad

To add info about a contact in your gmail accounts on iPad it says to bring up a contact and click on the blue mark to the right of the name to bring up the info screen. I do that but no info screen comes up??? Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I have iPad 2 and the latest version which I think is IOS 5

Windows phone 7 can do such thing very easily.
