Fast Company reports today on a really innovative use of the iPad mini, but unfortunately (unless you’re a multi-millionaire) it’s one that will set you back a cool $50,000!
Hyve-3D has been designed by HybridLab, and is an illustration platform that really is a little bit like the Star Trek Holodeck, comprising a 16-foot concave fabric screen that uses a trompe l’oil effect to make you feel like you’re immersed in the image, similar to when you’re in a planetarium and you feel like you are in the middle of the sky.
The two iPad minis are used to control the whole thing, being hooked up to motion-tracking systems. Moving the iPads back and forth in real space creates a big window in the projection. It’s kind of hard to explain, really, but the video does a good job of showing you how it all works!
“We don’t like virtual reality headsets because they are intrusive for collaborative work,” HybridLab director Dr. Tomas Dorta told Fast Company. “In the Hyve-3D you see your body related to the full-scale immersive projection and many people can collaborate without wearing any glasses or trackers on their heads.”
