Data roaming

I have had this problem twice. I went on a Norwegian Cruse and bought the wifi package on the ship and when I got back had a $300 data bill from AT&T Norwegian would not do anything and AT&T made me buy a plan to reduce the cost

Now I am in Aruba at a Marriott and logged into the free wifi and the next day got and email that my data roaming was over $300. Called AT&T and the bill was $470 for one day. They told me I had to turn off the data roaming so I did. Now I don't get my emails. How can I get my email on wifi?

Your email service should work just the same on WiFi, mine does. Your email doesn't care how it's connected to the Internet, only that it is.

Are you sure you are on wifi? It doesn't sound like you are.

Turn Airplane Mode on in Settings. That will force the iPad to drop the 3G service. You can then select the wifi service. Data Roaming, IMO, should ALWAYS be turned off, regardless of whether you are traveling or not. That way you don't have to remember to do it. It won't make any difference when you are on your home network.

This also works on an iPhone if you want to use wifi without being interrupted by phone calls.

Always turn off your cellular when you run into something like this. If you plan on wifi, turn off cellular. When you go on a trip, turn off cellular (until and unless you want to use it specifically and know what the cost will be). I can't say it enough, turn off cellular when outside of your country or carrier coverage area.
