Deleting Apple apps

Hi, thatch, welcome to iPF!
It's not possible to remove Apple apps on a stock iPad. There are some ways of hiding them:
In Settings - General - Restriction you could disable Safari, e.g., which will remove it from the home screen.
You could put them into a folder, where you don't need to look at them, or you can move them to a homescreen which you rarely use.
