Don't know where to turn!

My iPad (1st version) will not work. It is showing the iTunes logo and plug and says I need to restore.
When I follow directions to restore, it gets to almost the very end and then indicates I can't do it.
Have held the sleep and home buttons; tried another cord, tried another computer to connect to; tried to reinstall iTunes. All for naught.
Anyone have any idea what I can do? Many, many thanks!

If you have never jailbroken the iPad, you can probably ignore step #2 (though it won't hurt if you follow it). Then, if you do all the steps in the tutorial exactly as written, you should be sitting pretty with an iPad on a "fresh" iOS 5.1.1.
