What's new

Dumb question but I'm new

I have an iPad2 but haven't had it long enough to know much of anything. Never had one before. My question has to do with the "Find My iPad" feature through iCloud. I wasn't sure where I left my iPad so I used the "find" feature from work. It showed me that the device was at my home, but the green "light" next to the "My iPad" graphic indicated it was online. Nobody should be home using it, so shouldn't the iPad status button be grey? If it goes to sleep can it still appear to be online? Thanks.

Green and grey don't reflect its online status. Green means it got a location that is current. Gray means it was unable to get acquire the current location and may be showing the last known location of the device.

To show a location, say a current one, doesn't the iPad have to be on? I thought I turned it off before I left. Thank you for the reply BTW. I like your avatar. I collect stuff with skulls.

iPads only get turned off under two conditions.

1) The user holds the standby/sleep button till a slider appears that shows "Slide to power off" and the user slides it.
or
2) The battery runs out.

So when you hit the standby/sleep button the iPad goes into a mode that turns the screen off and suspends about 95% of the CPU activities. When in this sleep mode the iPad can still respond to outside events like notifications and "find my device" commands. So technically, it is possible that the only time your iPad is ever truly off is when you first buy it as long as you don't turn it off yourself or let the battery run out.

Okay thanks. I was pretty confused. I saw this mentioned on a site (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2698): A green dot
IL_MiniGreenDotFMI.png
to the left of your device’s name means it’s online, and a gray dot
IL_MiniGreyDotFMI.png
means that Find My iPhone is trying to connect to the device or that it’s offline.

I was beginning to think maybe somebody was in my house using my iPad. lol
