Email input problems

I have an iPad and an iPad 2. On my iPad when I opened the email program, I wasn't able to input text. The keyboard came up but when I tapped a key nothing happened. I went to notes and I was able to type there and also in pages . I then returned to mail and then I could type. My ipad has worked no problem for a year until today. Has anyone ever come across this?

This can happen if you forget to touch the field you want to type into - so, for example, if you open the email program and start a new message but the cursor is not flashing in any of the fields - so no cursor in the 'To' or 'Subject' or 'Message' field - you can type away but the iPad doesn't know where to put the text
