ePub Reader Recommendation

I'm looking for an ePub reader with fairly specific requirements. It must be capable of:

• reading both PDF and ePub
• opening multiple documents in tabs
• store documents locally in folders (and sub-folders)
• highlighting passages of text

Can anyone make any recommendations please. Many thanks.

Plenty of PDF (only) readers that will do all of this. I don't think I've ever seen a combination ePub/PDF reader that will do tabs, or store files in a folder structure.

Have you looked at iBooks? It's as close to what you want as I think you're going to get.

You can't highlight text in PDF's in iBooks. Otherwise I'd have thought it a better than nothing compromise.

I'm guessing that this is for research or study of some kind, and the ability to highlight and/or take notes will be important.

Hi Guys - yep, I looked at that post earlier today and did not have a ready answer - iBooks was my first thought and some folder organization is possible but crude - however, 'tabbing' is not a possibility - went to the App Store and entered 'eReader' w/ a lot of hits - I think that the OP will need to simply look there, read the reviews, and give a few a try (unless someone comes along w/ a more specific suggestion) - at the moment, I don't believe that an app exists to fulfill all of these 'wishes' - Dave

Jonek, why don't you tell us what you are trying to accomplish?

Perhaps someone knows, or can think of, a combination of apps that will let you do what you need; if not as perfectly as an app built for the purpose, then at least well enough to get the job done.

Thanks for all the input folks, really appreciate it.

The publications I use for studying are available in ePub and PDF, but I much prefer the ePub versions as they include links and are generally better formatted.

I often need to switch between two or more of those publications and tabs make that considerably easier.

Organisationally, I find it easier to put them in folders as to subject and then folders as to year release. Hence folders and sub-folders.

Highlighting and annotating are also important.

At the moment I'm using iBooks for the ePub versions and PDF Expert for PDF versions. If PDF Expert opened ePubs it would be perfect, but it doesn't.

Does anyone have experience with GoodReader or iAnnotate? Do they fit all criteria?

Unfortunately, no, neither of those two apps can read ePub files. They'll be great for PDFs as they'd do what you want. But - not ePubs. Sorry.

I own the same apps you do, Jonek, and how you are using them is about all I could have suggested. As for tabs in iBooks, the best you can do is create a collection for the books you are currently working with. While not as nice as one-tap-away tabs, it would make switching between them only two taps away. Using the list view instead of the cover view might help too, as it is more compact.

If you have the Multitasking Gestures enable in Settings > General, then you can four-finger-swipe between the two apps, which is faster than using the Home Button.
