As everyone is probably well aware by now, News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch and Apple’s Eddy Cue will be appearing together at the Guggenheim Museum in New York tomorrow to launch the iPad-only newspaper, The Daily. According to Peter Kafka, who writes All Things Digital’s MediaMemo blog, Rupert Murdoch is hosting a pre-launch cocktail party tonight at his Manhattan apartment, where a select group of guests will be treated to a first look at the app. Kafka says that sources who have seen The Daily are telling him that some parts of the “paper†look like regular stories that you might expect to see in a print newspaper, whereas other stories look more like iPhone apps with interactive graphics that you can swipe, pinch and zoom. There’s also a crossword puzzle and a Sudoku puzzle, again just like a regular newspaper. Plans are in the works for 3D video, and a special audio facility where the stories will be read aloud. Kafka says that according to one avowed Daily fan, the app is magical and a bit like Harry Potter’s The Daily Prophet newspaper, but at the less wildly enthusiastic end of the scale, Kafka has also spoken to those who say it is pretty similar to other iPad magazines that are already on the market, such as those published by Hearst and Conde Nast, with the main difference being of course that those apps are monthly, whereas The Daily is, well, daily! The weekly subscription fee will be $0.99, and it will be free for the first two weeks. More tomorrow after the launch.
