I got a message to update the operating system and did so. When I cam back an hour later I find my screen "locked". The screen is black with a white Apple logo and below it a thin gray bar with one end of the bar white. Any ideas on how to get my iPad back to working? The iPad was a gift so I am not sure what generation it is. Model number on the back is A1416. thank you for any input.

You're owner of an iPad 3.
First, try to reset it. This won't remove any information on your device. To reset, press and hole Home and Power button until the Apple logo appears. Release both and let the iPad power up.
