I don't know if the sim out of your phone would work, so I can't advise you there, someone else may chime in with a way forward. If your iPhone is at least a 3GS or higher you could make it a personal hotspot and then your iPad could tether to it. Have a look on your phone and see if Personal Hotspot is available, it should be third from the top. A word of warning though, some telcos will charge for this service, I have heard a figure of $20 a month, but the catch is they may want to change your plan to do this and as you have an unlimited plan you may not want to go this route. A mifi device is a portable modem/router from which you can connect up to 5 devices I believe and this will come with its own plan too, although here Australia, you can just top up when and if you want with this. You have a lot to think about. Good luck!
