Good free word processor compatible with .doc?

The only decent ones I've heard of all cost money.

For free you can get a Google account and use Google Docs. The features are limited and you need an internet connection, but it is free and you can export to .doc files.

You might try Google docs for simple editing. Naturally, not nearly the layout capabilities. I also use the Moleskine app for notekeeping, but that does not address your need for .doc compatibility.
