Google docs desktop version

Hi, new to the forum so please forgive my ignorance. I'm looking to do light editing in Google docs but need the desktop version and it keeps giving me an error. Am I missing something or should I purchase an app? Do others get an error trying to edit directly off the iPad? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!
