Have audio on earphones but not when I use IPad without?

I have limited experience with my IPad so this forum will be wonderful. At the moment I need help with my audio. I used my IPad yesterday with the earphones and even since I am unable to get audio on my IPad.
I have check volume settings and mute button on the side -- both are up and on (respectively).
I went to General and under the Use side Switch to: The mute has a check by it and I can't remove it.
I'm sure this is something sooooo simple, but I'm frustrated.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It's possible that the speaker or its connections are defective. If you have an Apple Store nearby, you may want to have it checked at the Genius Bar.

Make sure to back up your iPad if you can, before going to the apple store. If your iPad is still under warranty and the problem is a hardware issue, they'll likely exchange the iPad on the spot. You would then set up the replacement iPad from the backup you made.
