Trying to figure out icons on top of email page. There is a flag for flagging mail. There is one that moves mail to another folder. There is one replying,forwarding,etc There is one for creating an email and there is a box with a small line in the middle. That is the one I can't figure out. Help....

That would be the archive icon. Depending on your account's settings under Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars you will have either an Archive icon or a Trash icon. Sometimes they do exactly what the seem to say; email goes to the Trash or Archive folder as directed. Other times, like with Gmail, it seems to make little or no difference. Emails tend to end up in Gmail's archive folder, or the trash and archive folders.

Google doesn't use IMAP internally, so their IMAP service often fails to work as expected when accessed by other email clients.
