Welcome from Scotland. The iPad has very sophisticated battery charging electronics and, unlike older electronic equipment, there's no need to charge the iPad before you use it. You can 'top it up' too, as frequently as you want. The iPad battery doesn't have the 'memory problems' associated with earlier generation devices. Apple do, however, recommend you completely discharge the battery occasionally - this is not for the well-being of the battery, but rather to calibrate the battery 'meter' that indicates how much charge remains in the battery.
