What's new

Hello

Ok, introductions - I'm a marine biologist living in the UK. My beloved husband bought me a lovely iPad for an early Christmas present!

I have to confess to having been a PC user up till now but immediately on using the iPad I was sold on Apples. Mind you we did have an Apple 2+ back in 1982!

Although I am supposed to just be introducing myself, it is also a cry for help!

I got the IPad just before leaving for Australia for a couple of months. After a couple of weeks I noticed a hairline crack on the front and I immediately took it to the local Apple shop who were very good and immediately replaced it. Now because I had the iPad, I hadn't taken my laptop with me (the main reason for getting the iPad) so couldn't back up everything. Never mind, I hadn't got too much on it yet and I emailed the docs I needed to myself.

I loved using the iPad and took photos with it and uploaded the photos from my camera using the nifty little adaptor that they have for that. Great.

Returning to the UK I plug my iPad into my laptop and they talk to each other and update everything. But all the photos that I had taken in Australia have disappeared! The ones that I had put on the iPad before leaving were back, but that was all.

Please can anyone tell me if they are somewhere - there was no notification about deleting anything.

Also can anyone suggest which of the many books on using your iPad is best.

Thank you

Welcome to the forum.

Not sure what happened to your pics. Did you actually look at them on your iPad, after the transfer? Good news is you still have them on your camera.

There's an iPad users manual that's downloadable in iBooks. It's free. Get that before spending money on "how to" books. And this forum is a gold mine. Very experienced users participate and are eager to help others get the most out of their iPad.

I'm certain someone will come along shortly, with an answer to your picture question.

Thank you for the kind welcome.

The photos on the camera are fine - I didn't delete them after uploading thank goodness. But I took a lot of photos with the iPad and these are the ones which are lost. Can they really be gone with no message to tell you that you are about to lose all this? If so that's bad.

I'm still hoping that they're still in some corner somewhere!

Syncing your iPad should not have removed the pictures from the Camera Roll (where they would have been if taken with the iPad); however if they are gone, then that's probably the end of it. Since you did not have a computer with you and did not perform backups there will be no other copies.

Just to be sure; when you connect your iPad to your computer it should show up as a USB drive. Open that and look inside the DCIM folder. If your pictures are there, copy them off and be happy. But to be honest, if they were there the iPad should be displaying them, so the odds are not good.

Unless you've got iOS 5 and have been backing up to iCloud. In that case you can try a restore from backup. Hold in mind that you will lose everything you've done since that backup, so make copies of all documents and pictures before giving it a try.

If you have iOS 5 and iCloud, you might want to turn on PhotoStream. It's not really a backup, but it does keep your last 1000 photos online for a maximum of 30 days. That makes for a decent 'short-term' recovery tool.
