Help... I am doing something wrong

What am i doing wrong? I synched the ipad with my laptop. The laptop ended up with the ipad bookmarks and lost some of its own, but my big problem is that the books in iBooks migrated to the laptop and aren't on the ipad any more.... I can't figure out how to get them back onnthe ipad and keep it from happening again...

With the iPad connected to your computer, go into iTunes and select it from the Devices List. Choose the Books page from the top. Turn on syncing for all books, or selected books. If you choose selected books make sure each book you want to sync has a check mark next to it. Sync (or Apply in this case).
