Help please!

I purchased a used ipad2 Verizon last week and took it in the Verizon store today to set it up on the 3G network. I was told that it was still assigned to a previous phone number and that I would need to get the previous owner to delete it from their plan. I had bought it on eBay and asked the buyer if they couldndomthis for me. They stated that they had bought it used and had only used it for wifi. What can I do to get this iPad up and running? Any help would be greatly appreciated
