What's new

Hi newbie here!

Hi all,

As requested I'm introducing myself! My name is Samantha, Sam for short! As hinted in my username, I am an annual storm chaser, part of Skywarn etc, over in the USA. I have a passion for severe weather research and so am Editor and Director of The International Journal of Meteorology, a non-profit global severe weather journal for anyone interested in the weather and amazing photography too! The journal is a part of TORRO (TORnado and storm Research Organisation) all again non-profit.

We hold staff meetings and member conferences annually; i have a rare skin condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB for short!) and I have wanted an iPad for a long while now so I don't have to lug my laptop to meetings and conferences as with my disability it is difficult. So, although I've already downloaded a few office type apps I'm looking forward to the Microsoft office compatible stuff as I am finding a few problems with losing entries in my database of journal subscribers using the access client for iPad. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, did you fix it?

One last thing... REALLY feel like this is a dumb question, but, is there no "back" button on the ipad (lol)? E.g. I click a link from email it goes to Internet, so rather than having to hit "home" and click email again, how do you just go back?! Ipad2 btw. I'll surely be downloading the manual as suggested but thought I'd ask anyway!

Anyway hi all, and any Qs for me, fire away! Happy to be here woohoo!

Do a four finger swipe across the screen to switch between open apps.

Welcome to the iPad Forum. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Hi Sam-great intro! You have a very interesting career!! Regarding your question of the back button...if you updated to the previous update of iOS 5-you can do a 4 finger swipe across the screen to move from your email to safari.

See this for the tips and tricks of ios5. http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-os/49581-ios5-tips-tricks.html

Also: Welcome to the iPadForum! This Forum offers so much information related to the iPad (original-New), Acessories, Apps, Help, and Apple News.

The iPadForum also includes a Regional Ipad Group for international users across the world. This is a wonderful area to "find" members from your own country.
Regional iPad Groups

If you have not done so, please take a look at the iOS 5 Guideline Manual. iTunes - Books - iPad User Guide for iOS 5 by Apple Inc.

Finally, please do not forget to read the Rules!

Thanks guys! Don't worry skimonkey I'll be downloading the manual :) I administer on the TORRO forum so I know how annoying it is when people don't check things out and then complain or ask questions that are easy to find... Grr lol...

I know it looks like I just did that in my first post, but I asked 1) just whilst I was there, but mainly 2) because of my disability my fingers are fused together so doing that four finger swipe is nigh impossible for me ;( is that the ONLY way I can go back? If so, no worries, but it would be interesting to see if there's another way, or if anyone in this community has a disability that affects their hands and if they have found a way of doing it?

Ever so grateful, thanks! I should perhaps make clear I live in the UK but go over to the US to storm chase lol reading back it was a bit didn't explain that very well!

Hi Sam and welcome to the Forum!

Very interesting intro, I love storms also.
You can also swipe up on your screen with 4 fingers and they can be together then select from your multi task bar. I actually prefer this way. I hope this is easier for you.

2 very informative threads from which you will learn many tips and shortcuts for the IPad.

Hi Sam-you know I should have recognizes your disability when you mentioned it as I am in the health care profession. I see how doing the 4 finger swipe could be difficult when your mobility is limited. Of I see anything I will let you know.

There is a link that I sent to another member for his friend with spinal instability. Apple - Education - Special Education

There's info there that may interest you for physical and motor issues. Hope this helps.
