Hot iPad

Sometimes, but not always, I take my iPad out of my briefcase and it is warm to the touch; warmer than it should be, I think. Any comments, tips, folklore, or expert opinions?

This can happen when you are doing high-processer heavy things, such as games. In fact, I'm gaming as I'm typing this and my iPad is wam.

Hello,

What model 1,2 or 3 is your iPad?

Usually, it is just emerging from the briefcase after doing nothing, is it busy conspiring against me when I tuck it away?

Is the battery discharging while the iPad is idle?

Dunno, I'll check it the next time it happens. Don't think so.

A great deal has been written about "heat issues" related to iPad 3. The most common complaint involves the lower-left corner (in portrait with home-button at the bottom).

It is odd that your device is feeling warm to you when it hasn't been in use. That's why I asked about battery discharge.

If there's an Apple Store in your community it's worth your while to book an appointment at the Genius Bar. A technician will see you and run a diagnostic on your device. Just make sure you back up your iPad before going to the appointment.

Please let the forum know how the issue is resolved.

I'm in La, there's one almost in walking distance, will this Genius cost me anything?

Shouldn't, but as the Admiral suggests, make sure you do a backup before you go, because they might just whisk your iPad away and replace it with a new one right there and then. The procedure then would be to set up the new one from the backup, rather than as a new machine, but lets not get too far ahead of ourselves. Call the Apple Store before you go to set up an appointment. That way, you won't end up waiting a dog's age to see someone.

Is that a Russian Blue you are holding? Lovely cats! Ours tends to flop and perch onto anything that is remotely comfortable. Yours might do that on the briefcase creating a fair bit of warmth?

No No, did I really write this? Silly thought, as it would be if I mentioned about leaving it in a sunny spot. Not much help to you at all, I know, but I'm also intrigued by what could possibly be the reason for the iPad getting hot if you haven't used it before putting it in your briefcase.

The frustrating thing is that there must be an answer. I hope you will find it Mr. Davey. Admiral Adama's suggestion seems the only course of action now.
Regards, Andrew

You have an iPad 3 so your 1 year warranty remains in force. As KevinJS noted making an appointment (by phone or on-line) ensures you're served promptly when you arrive. I've dealt with the Genius Bar to resolve iPhone and iPad issues and have always left satisfied.

Jeeze! I can't wait!

Please note that leaving the screen on at full or high brightness will also make your iPad very warm. I assume you aren't doing that and that it is not on while inside the case. A trip to the Apple store may help but they do need to reproduce the problem to help you.

Well I do have one of those cases that wakes it up. Maybe the display wasn't off, that could happen.
