How can apps run in the background?

Like how the music player can run in the background while I surf the internet.
I have a few apps like nature sounds and relaxation music and I want them to run in the background while I read my i-books. How do I make the app run in the background?

I know I can play something in iTunes and surf the net at the same time. So I guess you're saying that this music you have is an app that doesn't use iTunes.

If it shuts off when you switch to books that may be something to ask the developer. Perhaps he can do an update for this in the future.
