how do I log into iCloud

Hi all.

A silly question I suppose, but it has me stumped

I tap the small cloud icon top right but the drop down message only says "no iCloud tabs".

The only contact that I have (to the best of my knowledge) with the cloud is when I backup in iTunes. I usually backup to the cloud and also to my PC.

Try going to Settings>iCloud on your iPad and logging in from there.
