how do I transfeer data from itunes to my ipad?

I have a bunch of music scores (staves and notes) in pdf format on itunes. But when I connect my ipad to the computer, its screen remains blank when I open the playlist tab where I want the files to reside. How do I get itunes to move the data over to the ipad and oput it where I want it?

Click File > Import > Import to Library

And to read it use iBooks its free.
