How do I watch abc in the uk? Please help!!!

Hi guys
I'm new to the forum so I would firstly like to say hi, I have an iPhone 4 and iPad 2.
I go to the us on holiday each year and love the tv shows, I fact I love a lot of things from there! I heard I could create a us iTunes account which I have done and I'm now in a position to download us apps.

I downloaded abc player however it knows I'm located outside the us due to my ip address. I know you can buy a VPN, I also heard however that you can change your router settings instead so would rather do that.

Any ideas if this is possible or how to do it?
