How to get free e-books for non-jailbroken iPad 2? Do I need to Jailbreak?

Hey guys!

I just bought an iPad 2, and I'm wondering if anyone knew what I could do to make it so that I can read e-books that would normally cost money on the iTunes Store. Books in the Harry Potter Saga, the Twilight Saga, and random mainstream books by lots of authors.
Would I have to download the .pdf version of the book, then convert it to iPad format? Then put it in an e-book app?

To put things simply, I'm wondering how I can read Harry Potter books for free on the iPad 2.
