I am new here.....can anyone help?

I have a new iPad2, and am using the mail app. It only shows me about 10 emails at any time, even though I have asked to see 500 most recent on the mail settings. Why will it not let me see my old emails? Anybody have an idea of what I am doing wrong. Thanks
