iGoogle search bar problem on iPad 3

iPad 3 the Google.com/ig search bar is very difficult to work with. There is no home or end button, so changing a search term at the beginning or the end may be impossible. I have to delete the entire search term and start over. Is there something I'm missing?

Have you tried pressing on the search term and holding the press until you see a magnifier-like pop-up appear? Then, after it appears, and while still pressing, you can move the cursor back and forth so you can edit or delete any text.

Short of deleting the whole thing and starting over, that's the only solution I have found (while using the virtual keyboard).
