Imessage problem.

Just started to use imessage. IPad Mini 2 iOS 9.2.1
I have two grand children in my contacts.
Both have gmail.com email addresses entered, but only one goes blue so I can send messages.
Among the remaning address, only very few will turn blue.
Anyway why does one gmail work but not the other.
Can anyone recommend an app that can send anyone in the contacts a message.

iMessage only works with apple products do both of them have apple products?

Yes both have iPhones.
But just to be sure I will recheck.

Problem sorted.
One of the phones had not had Messages set with an email address to send and receive.
So all good now.
