No the 3G won't be getting it, it doesn't have the hardware to handle it.

Two points I should make, before anyone takes the time to correct me!
1. This is an iPad forum - why am I asking for advice on a steam-powered iPhone 3G?
2. Separate googles I have done have revealed that the 3G is not man enough to run iOS 5, and never will - it's hardly surprising. I understand Jobs forbade multi-tasking on the iPhone 3 series when it was launched, as if allowed to (it is capable), it would run like a dog (with one leg) - that's IT system managers' jargon, if you didn't know.

However, another query occurs to me - will iCloud sync functions be supported on the iPhone 3G?

Nope no iCloud either, 3G will get no new features or upgrades, it's time has gone.

If you want generic Cloud support on the iPhone 3G just use Dropbox.
