Ipad 2 and videos

Is there a video format that can be loaded to the iPad 2 through iTunes? I have loaded some Teachco lectures but it says everything else I have tried can't be played on the IPad. I know it can as I have used a different app to do it, but then you have to replace iTunes or be very careful to get the two in sync. A pain when you should be able to do it through iTunes.

I bought a program called AZUL and it plays AVI movies just fine.

iOS will only play mp4 format, but as stated above there are plenty of apps that will play other formats, or covert the videos before loading into iTunes. Lot of people recommend Handbrake.

The movie apps let you load the movie files directly in to the app itself, once connected to iTunes.
