iPad 2 durability?

So according to iFixit, the ipad 2's weight reduction is mostly due to a lighter and thinner glass and lcd. apparently 75% of the difference in weight is from the new glass. What does this mean for durability? I havent seen any drop tests yet but does this mean itll be more flimsy than the already easily-breakable ipad 1?

Yes - the iFixit tear-down was very interesting - I'm a techie geek so I just love seeing the insides of these things. I'm the sort of guy who used to have silicon chip photomicrographs on my wall - oh, well, another era...

Yes - thinner glass - in fact, much thinner glass. What, of course, is not clear is whether the new glass is a stronger formulation. I'm sure that Apple must have thought long-and-hard about the possibility of a whole raft of iPad2 glass breakages hitting the news and what that would do to the reputation of the iPad2. I'm sure they've done extensive laboratory testing - drop testing, environmental chambers, vibration testing etc - it's 100% standard procedure for any new product and a company with Apple's reputation is not going to 'skimp' on this aspect of a new product. They know only too well that the iPad is going to be carried around in backpacks and shopping bags - some even without a protective case! So I wouldn't be too worried about this; as they say they'll 'have done their sums' and I'm sure we won't be reporting on screen breakages.

Now, of course, just to prove me wrong, we're going to get a whole bag of posts from Forum members who *have* broken their iPad screens....why can't I keep my mouth shut!!!

According to a report on NPR on Monday, Apple is reputed to use Corning's Gorilla Glass - a specially formulated glass that is extremely resistant to fracture.

I did a drop Test by accident yesterday with my new iPad 2. While getting coffee I knocked off my new iPad 2 on the concrete floor from a counter that was about 3 foot high. Thankfully it didn't break.

At the very least you should not be allowed access to that iPad 2, unsupervised, for at least 10 days. Just sayin' .

Easily-breakable iPad 1? Please provide your source. I used mine heavily everyday for 11 months. Why didn't it break?

If you drop glass on a hard floor it could break, but what does "easily breakable" mean? Squeezing it too tight? Looking at the screen too hard?

Ipad1 is durable as a Moro. Mine has dropped several times, in the apple case or targus truss case, on it's back, face down, etc.. No problems, no scratches, no dents, no anything. iPad still wrks n looks as if it's brand new. These are some tough glass used on ipad1. I would think ipad2 glass more liable to break cuz it's a lot thinner., regardless If same type of glass used as in ipad1. Unless they used some newer steonfpger type of glass to allow it to be thinner and stronger, the thicker glass will always win.

An egg squeezed from the side is breaks easily. An egg squeezed from the top/bottom is a different story. Glass hit in just the right spot will shatter easily whereas unless you hit it just right it is very durable. Chances of hitting it just right in the crystal line are slim but it is possible

I swung a roofing hammer as hard as I could at my ipad 2, hit it dead center of the screen........ no breakage.... ever so slight scratch.
